A NEW READER'S THEATER - FOR BACK TO SCHOOL!
BACK TO SCHOOL - ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!
A READER'S THEATER SCRIPT FOR GRADES 2-4 (3rd grade target)
Get your back to school time rolling right along with a wacky, wonderful Reader’s Theater play! It’s a chance to jump right into reading with a cooperative - and often hilarious - project, and, if you like, an opportunity for your students to work together on a performance piece for Back to School Night.
There are two versions of this script: the first is a regular Reader’s Theater, which can be used by up to 5 students in your Reading Centers or during any classroom Reading Time, as you wish. The second version is for 20 students (and can be adjusted for more or fewer students, to suit your class size), to be used as a whole class reading exercise, a class performance, or for actual performance - it’s perfect for a Back to School Night, or Open House Night!
This Reader’s Theater script is tailored to 3rd grade, with a few extra vocabulary terms introduced (I always believe in introducing new vocabulary!). Note that advanced 2nd grade readers might wish to use it, and 4th grade classes might find it enjoyable as well.
*Back to School Reader’s Theater worksheets will be posted to accompany the script, with reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, contractions, compound words, Spanish flashcards, conditionals, plurals, and discussion questions.

New Reader's Theater Script: WHERE ARE MY MITTENS??
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Where-Are-My-Mittens-A-Readers-Theater-Script-for-Grades-2-3-1603332
Where Are My Mittens? is a ready-to-go, Reader's Theater script, written with a lighthearted touch and a winter or winter holidays theme.
Two characters, a brother and sister, get ready to go outside and play in the snow. But wait.... do they know where their mittens are?
Color words, simple contractions, to and too, demonstrative pronouns and adjectives, possessive adjectives, place prepositions, they're and there, winter clothing, winter weather, where and wear, "ea" dipthong, simple compound words, and sequencing are all practiced, with a few new vocabulary words introduced.
This script can easily be used as a performance piece (get students to "dress up" in their own winter clothing, or in funny, large clothes, etc.), with different "teams" performing. You can use it in your reading centers, or refine it for a Holiday Performance selection - parents will love it too!
Reading Level: 2nd-3rd grades.

THANKSGIVING LITERACY PACKET Grades 4-8

Are you looking forward to Thanksgiving? Is it a huge family feast in your home?
It usually is for us, but this year is going to be so quiet, with family members away. I'm not sure how I feel about it - a little forlorn I guess, but I have to admit too that there is less stress for planning.
Leading up to Thanksgiving in the classroom I always needed a few extra activities to keep the kids engaged, and incorporating the holiday theme always seemed to help, whether in math with shopping costs tasks, or with writing and literacy tasks. (For math, get flyers and have them plan a menu, "shop" the local stores through the ads, tally all costs, and come up with a viable meal with a given budget. Or compare store costs for given items on the busiest shopping day of the year. Plan a budget for gift-giving, make a list, and see how many of those items can be covered, tallying up the costs with shopping the sales, again through the weekly ads. Younger kids can make pie charts to graph the Thanksgiving pie preferences.)
I have compiled a mini-pack of useful writing and literacy worksheets here to help you out, and I've thrown in six printable pages of Thanksgiving stationery as well, useful for final writing projects, being grateful letters, etc.
I hope you find this mini-pack useful right now, and I also hope you get a restful long weekend holiday! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Olympic Winter Games Colorful Mitten Word Walls
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Olympic-Winter-Games-2014-Mitten-Word-Wall-1106961
Celebrate the Olympic Winter Games 2014 with these colorful word wall or vocabulary cards!
Need some activities? Try these:
Mix up your word wall activities with the blank templates and the sports names for older students: have them write down the USA team athlete names, and then match them up (game style, or on a bulletin board display) to the correct sport.
For older students as well, you can shuffle the cards, hand out three cards apiece, and have students write an Olympic Games paragraph, incorporating those terms, of course!
Use the cards also on bulletin boards, as title markers. Bring in stats for winners, news clippings, etc. and post them under each mitten title/header.
Finally, hold a spelling bee with the cards. Shuffle your deck. Line up your students. Give them the name of the term on the card you pull, which the student then has to spell (and/or define). You can split your students into "country teams" for this one, and see who gets the gold, silver, and bronze!
GO TEAM USA!

Free Thanksgiving Stationery (Primary Lines)

Do you find that your kids are more enthusiastic about their writing projects when they have some special paper to write with? I find that it works if you use it sparingly - and only give it out for the final copy, after drafts have been approved. Of course, it doesn't hurt to show them the paper they will get for their final copies!
What are you writing about this Thanksgiving? There's always the old standby, what kids are grateful for (and it's an important exercise!). They might get a kick out of writing about what they're NOT grateful for! (That should get a few giggles, especially if you start - dramatically, of course! - with what YOU are not grateful for? Can't you just hear them running home and telling Mom: Mrs. Barron said today that she's not grateful for mice! She really doesn't like them! She even told us she went and stared at them at a pet store to try to like them more, but she just shuddered and ended up being more scared of them! - Yup, I'll hear about that one at a parent-teacher conference :)
You can write a class letter to your community leaders, stating what you are grateful for. Even better, have kids write a letter to a family member, saying what they might have taken for granted, but should indeed be grateful for; now there's a thoughtful exercise!
How about writing about the wackiest Thanksgiving dinner they can imagine? Or the very worst Thanksgiving dinner ever, that perhaps was all burnt to a crisp, or all came from frozen boxes? It doesn't have to be real; they can use their imaginations, I'm sure!
Whatever your Thanksgiving writing projects, I hope you will find these three printable stationery pages helpful, and may you all have a wonderful, warm Thanksgiving!

Silly Turkey Counting by Two Task, Flash, or Math Center Printable Cards
I always liked having my students work in pairs to count by twos. They could alternate, time each other, prompt each other, hold up cards, and help each other study. And I liked giving them a special certificate when they reached mastery at different levels (20, 50, 100, etc., depending on their grade level).
I made some silly turkey-themed cards just for this purpose. You can print them out onto card stock (or even laminate them) for durability, or especially if you want to include them as task cards in your classroom math centers. Any which way you use them, you can get some extra math practice in with your elementary students this Thanksgiving season!
I've included some game cards: go back, move ahead, free pass, in case you want to play group games with them as well!

Happy Halloween!
What are you going to be for Halloween? Do you dress up for your kids and do they have a costume "moment" or parade in class? What time do they start trick-or-treating? We are finding it goes later each year, with older kids "haunting" till the wee hours, and younger kiddies starting around 5pm to go door-to-door. We have a "harvest" celebration that the church across the street hosts each year, which seems to get busier and louder each year, and we certainly get an influx of trick-or-treaters - older - right after the festival ends. How is it in your neighborhood, and what do you do to celebrate, both in and outside of the classroom? If you still need some last-minute activities, try a printable packet for both early and upper elementary grades, and you can download a free "preview" printable at each link. Have a safe and fun Halloween!
