Goldilocks visits the North Pole and has some adventures with the elves from Santa's Workshop in this Christmas Readers' Theater program. These stars are truly elegant and make lasting treasures to hang up for the holidays. We started with the largest star at the top, but you could form the hanging star ornament or mobile by beginning with the smallest and working down to the largest star as well. Make Some Wonderful Tin Ornaments!
I absolutely love making these ornaments each year, and best of all, they're pretty easy to make! Try bright colors in permanent markers to paint the ornaments with; I found they work much better than paint. You can use knitting needles, old pens or even chopsticks to emboss lines on your ornaments, and recently I found copper flashing for roofs at hardware stores that cuts like a charm, and etches so easily - I'll never go back to aluminum after trying this stuff! Click on the links below to find all of the pages for instructions, templates and pictures of these wonderful holiday ornaments.

Indian Corn Template
Use our corn templates for Indian Corn art projects. Glue on rolled up or scrunched up pieces of colored tissue paper, or use popcorn kernels (try to find the red ones). Print onto card stock, and then you can paint on a layer of white glue. Use either tissue paper strips, layered over each other for the husks, or cut strips from real husks. Then layer on corn kernels or tissue paper balls, or even use a variety of dried beans & lentils to still get the same look of Indian Corn. Make sure to let dry thoroughly before moving. And while it's tempting to click on the image itself, if you click on the link, you will be taken to the full size corn template for printing out. Enjoy! - & let us know how you make yours (we'd love to post a picture...)

You have journeyed back in time to the year 1621, and you arrive in the middle of a Thanksgiving feast. Both Pilgrims and Wampanoag peoples are enjoying themselves, but they are very perplexed by your presence. How are you dressed? What have you brought with you? What will you tell everyone present? Will

Pebbles on the beach
For me, fall brings with it not only a new crispness in the air, but a rush and whirl of busy-ness. I don't enjoy the heat we get here in August and early September, but we always have the beach nearby for a bit of respite from climbing thermometers. So as summer exits, those beach visits send echoes of the summers I love: the colors, sights and sounds of sand, pebbles and sea.

Make a Bug Jar!
Bug jars are fun to make in the summer time, and encourage young naturalists to observe insects. All you need is a clean, dry mason jar, some acrylic paints (add glass medium if you wish, but we didn't find it necessary), one nail, and a hammer. Be sure to carefully hammer a few holes in the lid (taken off the jar for hammering purposes and set solidly on a hard surface) - for air. Paint your bug jar however you wish - imagination counts! - we did ours with some cute ladybugs. When dry, put a bit of grass into the jar, add bugs, and sketch, photograph, or write your observations in a nature journal this summer. One caveat: make sure you let your insects go after a short amount of time. They need to forage and find their own food, and it will allow your young biologists to collect other bugs to study.
